Etudes for the Everyday

2013 –
Participatory project evolving around mindful practices presented through exhibitions, workshops, a printed compilation and an online platform

In collaboration with Stephanie Cheung with contributions from 100+ art and cultural practitioners in Hong Kong

Etudes for the Everyday started out as the second part of the Etudes exhibition. It began with an invitation to our respected friends in the local art and cultural community, asking them to share something they, or someone dear to them, have been, or would like to practise, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or perpetually.

More than 100 replied. Each generously shared a practice in a handwritten note: “to eat an orange and feel it”, saying “yes” and “no”, complimenting someone, thanking the bus driver… We cherishingly encased them in recycled wooden holders, handcrafted by a few dear friends.

With the support of many people and organisations, further to the initiative exhibition, Etudes for the Everyday has been shared with the public through workshops, a printed compilation and an online platform. Practice with people from all walks of lives led us to so many beautiful encounters: a line etched by centuries of domestic labour, an elder who graced an entire street with his craft, a break on the roof from the busiest May, handmade bread fresh from the oven…
